July 12, 2024

Discover the 3 best supplements to support memory and combat dementia, backed by science.

There are many different vitamins and supplement treatments for dementia on the market. But which are the best ones? We’ve taken a close look at the science to pick out the 3 best supplements for dementia. With so many different vitamins for dementia and Alzheimer’s on the market, picking the right one can be hard. With this guide, you’ll have a better idea of what to look for.

Vitamins for Dementia: Examining Some Common Supplements

While many different vitamins for dementia are on the market, some active ingredients have better proven clinical effectiveness than others. Here are two popular options that have shown mixed results in the laboratory.

Vitamin B

While it previously was thought to have some benefit to cognitive health, some recent studies have found B-vitamin supplements lacking. These studies suggest B-vitamin supplements don’t improve cognitive function in adults 50 or older with or without dementia.

However, a meta-analysis also suggests a possible slowing in cognitive decline when taking B supplements. So, there are overall mixed results to its effectiveness.

Gingko Biloba

Gingko biloba is a popular herbal supplement said to improve memory and cognition. While several trials have tried to test its effectiveness, none have conclusively proven that Gingko Biloba can slow cognitive decline.

Some studies suggest a regimen of approximately 240 mg/day may potentially slow this decline. Other studies, however, found little change compared to placebos.

The Best Vitamins for Dementia: 3 to Look Out For

The best vitamins for dementia should be ones that have shown clinical effectiveness in treating the condition. Here are three vitamins for dementia and Alzheimer’s that pass that particular test.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids have one of the most consistently positive records among nutritional and dietary factors that can prevent cognitive decline. However, some researchers question the nature of these studies.

Some of these studies measure the overall intake of Omega-3 fatty acids through fish consumption. Other studies and reviews have questioned the effectiveness of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid supplements in treating mild-to-moderate Alzheimer’s. While there does appear to be some benefit overall, whether that’s isolated to the fatty acid itself remains to be seen.

Vitamin E

The best supplements for dementia are probably Vitamin E supplements. Vitamin E has shown the most promise in preventing and treating Alzheimer’s or Alzheimer 's-like conditions in animals and laboratory settings. However, evidence in human studies remains more limited.

Curcumin

Curcumin is a bright yellow chemical that’s the principal ingredient in turmeric, a member of the ginger family. It’s often sold as an herbal supplement, cosmetics ingredient, food flavoring, or food coloring.

Preclinical trials have shown curcumin to target inflammatory and antioxidant pathways. Some researchers are excited about its potential in treating cognitive disorders like Alzheimer’s. However, the trials currently performed on curcumin have been inconsistent, making it difficult to draw meaningful conclusions.

These supplements have all shown some potential to help with cognition to at least some degree. Combined with regular mental activity and a bit of luck, these treatments will keep seniors feeling mentally sharper for longer. Talk with your doctor if you have more questions or if any seems right.
